What is Earth Painting?
Like photographs, Earth Paintings capture the Earth as it is by means of pigmentation and texture. In our creative practice, we are dedicated to creating Earth Paintings in the most sustainable way to honour their name.
Natural and local pigments
We work with natural materials, using pigments derived from rocks, minerals, ashes, sand, soil... These are sourced through a process which we later explain as intentional sourcing: a conscious approach that respects the environment and our role as 'guardians' of Earth.
Reclaimed wood
All of the woodwork of our Earth Paintings - from the stretcher frames to the floating frames - is handcrafted by us, using traditional woodworking techniques. We only use reclaimed wood, or wood from fallen trees in the forest surrounding our home. They may be curved and chipped, which, in our eyes, only adds character.
Recycled denim jeans
To prevent denim jeans from ending up in landfills, we use them to create canvases. These jeans are obtained through our network or from shops like the British Red Cross, with a focus on local sourcing.
Chemical-free
We have made a conscious decision to avoid using chemicals, such as varnish spray or non-natural paint. Although our minds may desire to maximise the longevity of an Earth Painting and preserve it in time, we acknowledge that nature operates differently. Nature evolves, erodes, and lives, and Earth Paintings reflect that natural process.
Adhesives
We use, amongst others, an ecological glue in our liquid paint mixture. However, we are constantly experimenting with other environmentally-friendly products to further enhance the naturalness of the process.
